Timber Framing >
Timber Frame construction is an age-old method of building. It utilizes wooden posts, beams and diagonal knee braces. Pieces are fitted together, somewhat like a puzzle, via mortise and tenon joinery, and secured with wooden pegs. These components combined are why timber frames have so successfully stood the test of time. Moreover, timber framing allows for local materials to be transformed into structures without extensive transportation and processing procedures, which is common in most building practices today. Therefore, timber frames are an excellent choice for beauty, stability and sustainability. |

Straw Bale >
Straw bale construction is made up of four main components, straw, clay, sand and water. In straw bale construction, straw “square” bales are systematically stacked to make up an enclosure system, and approximately two inches of earthen plaster is applied to the interior and exterior of the building. The earthen plaster is comprised mostly of clay, sand, water and straw. Between the 18 inch width of the bales and several inches of plaster, straw bale buildings offer superior insulation and good thermal mass. With proper design and building techniques, the straw bale wall system allows a building to be very energy efficient, as well as healthy and breathable. |
 |
Cob >
Cob is a form of earth building in which a mixture of clay, straw, sand and/or gravel is piled on a wall while wet and worked into place. Considered a very artistic style of building, cob can be formed to almost any shape. Cob has good thermal mass, but poor insulation. Therefore, it’s a superior building technique for small, complex buildings, interior walls, ovens, and buildings that are solar heated and need thermal stability. |

Straw-clay >
One of the oldest straw-construction techniques known, straw-clay is a traditional European system for making medium-weight insulating infill in timber framed walls and roofs. It is made of straw coated in a thin clay slip (moistened clay), and rammed between forms. |
 |
Earthen Plasters & Floors >
Earthen plaster, interior and exterior, with its patterns and colors can be aesthetically rewarding. Plasters in the eastern United States are usually composed of earth, shredded straw, lime-sand and lime-clay. Earth pigments, sometimes naturally occurring in clay (i.e., the red clay of southeastern Ohio), micas (biotite and muscovite) and limewash are all added constituents of earthen plasters. Earthen floors are made up of similar components, applied after the ground is prepared by removing topsoil, compacting the subsoil and laying down several layers of gravel. |

Sustainable Woodlot Management >
The forest is a dynamic and complex ecosystem that’s sensitive to human intervention. At FNB we work to utilize the forest while protecting its health and natural rhythms. By selectively cutting timber, practicing reforestation, and gaining help from our work horses (Letty and Karen), we are able to fell and remove timber with little impact on the forest ecosystem. This allows us to provide forest products (agroforestry) that consumers can feel good about. Furthermore, we take pride in educating ourselves on further health issues such as tree pests and pathogens and their treatment, naturally. |

Green Remodeling >
With the use of all natural and sustainable resources FNB will remodel your home. We offer the installation of all natural flooring and energy efficient systems. |
 |
Custom Milling & Furniture >
Fox Natural Building operates a Wood-Mizer ® Portable Sawmill. We run the mill on biodiesel because we feel it’s a healthy alternative to petroleum fuel. FNB will custom mill dimensional lumber as well as natural edged timers and slabs. Natural edged timbers are used in timber frame construction and slabs are used for counter tops, tables, benches, stair treads and mantles. With the use of natural edged timber, the shapes and colors of native hardwoods are beautifully displayed.
